New gin distillery launches in Galashiels

The Citrologist Gins Stand: LG112
New gin distillery launches in Galashiels
Paul & Malcolm in their distillery

The Citrologist, a range of premium gins distilled and bottled by The Wildings Distillery in Galashiels, went on sale last week. The founders are Paul Cormie, a retired GP from Stow and Malcolm MacLeod, a retired academic. They met in 1979 during their first days as students at Aberdeen University while Paul was studying medicine and Malcolm, psychology. A chance 60th birthday present from Malcolm to Paul in 2021 of a gin making experience sparked an interest in Paul that has since become a passion and has seen the friends extend their relationship to become business partners.

Using high quality botanicals and only fresh citrus, Paul’s skills as a “gin alchemist” has resulted in the creation of a spectacular range of premium citrus and dry gins. Their friend, Kate Philp, an acclaimed artist in Northumberland, has drawn the botanicals which feature on the labels and illustrate the different ingredients in each of their gins. The full range of gins and Xmas gin gifts can be found on their website www.thecitrologist.com

For Paul and Malcolm this is a new and exciting direction for their friendship. For Malcolm, it has the added poignancy of resurrecting a family tradition of distilling - Malcolm's late father and uncles all spent their working lives at Dalmore Distillery in the Highlands.

Both Paul and Malcolm are proud to be part of the Borders business community and look forward to making new friends and forging new business relationships with fellow gin lovers in Galashiels and beyond. When asked if they might prefer to put their feet up, their response is, "Absolutely not!" For them, the future is clear. The future is The Citrologist Gin.
