We are well known for our triangle shaped oatcakes, a shape that dates back centuries to when oats and water would be mixed together, the dough rolled out thinly like a pancake, cooked on a round griddle over an open fire and then quartered.
We make a variety of flavours and our Orkney Beremeal Oatcakes use flour from the ancient grain ‘bere', a barley grown and milled on Orkney by The Barony Mill, in Birsay. The Mill is Orkney’s only working water mill and dates to 1873.
Traditionally, oatcakes were eaten instead of bread with soup or a nice hearty stew. Today they complement any cheeseboard, are popular with pâté, smoked salmon, honey, peanut butter, or jam. Find out more about our oatcakes and recipe ideas on our website.
